Situation
The objective of the project was to minimize odors and reduce sludge management costs.
Solution
Based on preliminary engineering evaluations including bench scale laboratory studies, Rose & Westra, Inc. (R&W) found that an Auto Thermal Aerobic Digestion (ATAD) unit would be effective in reducing odors, sludge volume, and sludge management costs. The ATAD system was designed by R&W utilizing waste oxygen generated at the chemical manufacturing facility. The system design included a 330,000 gallon tank with a pure oxygen in-situ aerator similar to the Praxair® ISO. The new system was designed for a waste activated sludge stream of 8,000 lbs (dry weight) per day.
The following benefits were derived from the new system :
- Reduced odors in the area of the treatment plant.
- Reduced odors at the landfill.
- A 40% reduction in solids and disposal.
- Reduced operating costs.
